Sub Rosa

David Kadish and Angie Hostetler

Description:

Sub Rosa is a responsive piece that maintains a sensitive tie to its aural surroundings. Positioned amidst the din of the public space, it listens, pulsing with voices resounding around it. Only when the noise stops can this muted blossom speak of the life it holds. Sub Rosa comments on the sacrifice and the reward of interactive discourse: what new ideas might form or possibilities might open up if we take a pause and direct our attention to the small, unobtrusive observer among us? We tend to see organic life and technology as in clashing opposition. It’s true that technology has overwhelmed our lives with information accessibility and a surplus of media noise. Sub Rosa is a hybrid flower – a new organism of sorts – that attempts to reclaim the respite of silence within the context of our human relationship with technology.

Sounds of Life

Nida Raja and Gabriel Misaka

Description:

Inspired by the moods conveyed in sounds, especially the emotions displayed through different songs, we wished to convert those audible feelings into visible form, and use the sound waves’ rhythmic patterns of ups and downs to represent life. The sound waves generated signify the interaction of two different emotions and display how when both feelings are the same, emotion can be amplified, and when feelings are opposite, they might neutralize each other.
